Around 150 years ago, a French artist and chemist – Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, invented the first of what became ‘photographs’. It was a long and tricky process involving polished copper, emulsions and patience - called ‘Daguerreotype’.
A few years ago, while having coffee with a friend, another friend that I hadn’t seen in a while, walked by. I stepped a few feet from the table and while talking and showing him the first images from my first ‘Spirit Waves’ expedition, I mentioned that I wanted to try printing them on metal – photography coming full circle – back to images on metal like the first Daguerreotypes.
As I returned to the table, my friend who overheard part of our conversation said to me ‘that’s a great name, you should use it’. Not sure exactly what he was talking about, I asked ‘what name?’. He said ‘DaGarrettype, it has a good ring to it!”
Nothing complicated, just a turn of a phrase and an homage to one of the inventors of a process that has been such an important part of my life for many decades…
